About D1 Decking Solutions

Based in West Malling, Kent, D1 Decking Solutions is a specialist supplier and installer of non-combustible decking. With 30 years’ experience and a reputation for workmanship excellence, D1 Decking Solutions were appointed as the main contractor for Oakhill Park project, a scheme which involved the removal and replacement of unsuitable decking from 42 balconies.

The project - Replacing combustible decking at Oakhill Park

Located in Putney, Southwest London, Oakhill Park is a high-end five-storey residential apartment block. Each apartment comes complete with a balcony, but these balconies contained historically installed composite decking and timber bearers, both of which are highly flammable and can no longer be used on high rise buildings. D1 Decking Solutions was tasked with removing the existing decking and replacing it with a non-combustible decking solution.

Prevent painting

Adek’s lightweight aluminium non-combustible decking system was D1 Decking Solution’s replacement of choice, as Daniel Calver, Project Construction Manager at D1 Decking Solutions, explains:

“We have used Adek decking solutions in previous projects and knew that its combination of safety and style would be the perfect fit for Oakhill Park. Being A2fl-s1 / A2, s1 -d0 fire rated, Adek boards are compliant with all building regulations, whilst its slip resistant properties make it safe and comfortable underfoot. It’s sleek lines and contemporary colour also make it ideal for high end developments such as Oakhill Park.”

A phased approach

The project was divided into three phases – Phase 1 featured 12 balconies; Phase 2 included 16 balconies; and Phase 3 contained 14 balconies.

D1 Decking Solution’s first job was to supply and erect the appropriate scaffolding, ensuring handrails and adaptions were fitted correctly and crash decks were installed below each balcony.

With each phase, D1 Decking Soluions had to start by removing the existing composite decking and wooden bearers on each balcony. New aluminium bearers were then installed, before Adek’s non-combustible aluminium decking was laid on top.

These deck boards were cut to size to ensure a neat and seamless join around brickwork and thresholds. Infills were also installed to cover fixing points, providing a smooth and continuous finish to the deck.

Safety first

As the main contractor on site, D1 Decking Solutions was also instructed to ensure health and safety compliance was met on all aspects of the project. This included the implementation of several safety procedures and protocols from a construction phase plan and inductions for all trades, to welfare facilities, toolbox talks and resident liaising.

“We take health and safety extremely seriously and are proud of our safety record. The installation of new fire safe decking on all 42 balconies at Oakhill Park was carried out with skill and professionalism – and Adek helped us achieve this,” adds Daniel.
